چکیده

Neurocysticercosis is a disease of poverty and underdevelopment. Little is known about the natural history of the infection in humans, but some of the mechanisms whereby the parasite remains silent and evades the host immune response are understood. Symptomatic neurocysticercosis usually results from host inflammatory response after parasite death, and the clinical manifestations can be diverse. There is no evidence that cysticidal treatment does more good than harm in addition to conventional antiepileptic treatment. Population control measures involving immunisation or mass treatment have not shown long term eVectiveness. Epilepsy, similarly to neurocysticercosis, is a largely unrecognised but increasing burden on the welfare and economies of developing countries. The technology of drug treatment and psychosocial rehabilitation is well known but requires widespread and eVective dissemination at low cost. There is little epidemiological data on risk factors for epilepsy in developing countries on which to base prevention strategies. The public health prioritisation of chronic disorders such as epilepsy remains a challenge for policy and practice in developing countries. For both neurocysticercosis and epilepsy, there is a dilemma about whether limited public resources would better be spent on general economic development, which would be expected to have a broad impact on the health and welfare of communities, or on specific programmes to help individual aVected people with neurocysticercosis and epilepsy. Either approach requires detailed economic evaluation. (J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry 2000;68:137–143)

Neurocysticercosis and Afebrile Seizure

The report on “neurocysticercosis and afebrile seizure” is very interesting. SAHU et al. noted that “neurocysticercosis should be suspected in every child presenting with afebrile seizure especially with a radio-imaging supportive diagnosis in tropical developing countries or areas endemic for teniasis/cysticercosis”. In fact, neurocysticercosis is a very important tropical neurological infecti...

The Serological Survey for Human Cysticercosis Prevalence in Mbulu District, Tanzania

Human cysticercosis, a zoonotic disease due to Taeniasolium, is of the highly debilitating and stigmatizing neglected tropical diseases due to epilepsy, ophthalmia and dermatological disorders in endemic developing countries. Tanzania is among the sub-Saharan African countries with an average prevalence of porcine cysticercosis 17.2% [1], which increases the risk of human cysticercosis infectio...

Neurocysticercosis and epilepsy

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common parasitic disease of the central nervous system that affects thousands of people all over the world, mainly in Latin America (Mexico, Central America, equatorial zone, and Brazil), Asia (India and China), and Africa. Also because of the high immigration rates from endemic to nonendemic areas, NCC is now commonly seen in countries that were previously ...

Neurocysticercosis and Epilepsy

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a biological marker of poverty and underdevelopment [1]. The frequency of this brain parasitic disease is probably high worldwide, as well as epilepsy; however, little is known about the natural history of the infection in humans. Both, NCC and epilepsy, are an increasing burden on the welfare and economy of developing countries [2]. This is why knowledge of these di...

Epilepsy and neurocysticercosis: an incidence study in a Peruvian rural population.

BACKGROUND Epilepsy is a serious neurological disorder and neurocysticercosis (NCC), the central nervous system infection by the larvae of Taenia solium, is the main cause of acquired epilepsy in developing countries. NCC is becoming more frequent in industrialized countries due to immigration from endemic areas. Previously reported epilepsy incidences range from 30 to 50/100,000 people in indu...
